Good read. My opinion is buying a home is generally a good deal. Timing is important. Right now is a great time to buy as interest rates are low and prices are low. Often as interest rates rise high end homes begin to suffer in value as there are fewer potential buyers.
When you rent you have nothing to show for your savings. 20 to 30 years ago I was an advocate of buying the most home you could afford. 10 years ago I changed my bias towards lower cost homes or renting. Today I am in favor of buying a home that you plan to stay in for a long time as interest rates will rise. Today if I were buying I would be out to find a real deal. There are a lot of motivated sellers out there.
