Imagine you’re looking to buy a big screen TV. When you walk into the store, a salesman approached you and after talking to you about your needs, he gave you three choices:
- Toshiba – $2000
- Samsung – $2300
- Sony – $2500
Other than the brand, you couldn’t see any difference in them – and you didn’t care about the design of the TV. Which would you choose?
Most people would be stumped. Yet we face similar choices on a daily basis. Would you buy a $5, $6 or $7 pen? Which shampoo should you try this month? What about your toothpaste?
According to Dan Ariely, author of Predictably Irrational
, when faced with a choice we can’t make, most people would go for the safe choice, which in this case, would be Samsung. Why? Because we are wary of the cheapest choice yet afraid of paying too much for something we are not sure about.

We all reach a point where a new pair of shoes has to be weighed up against the fact the gas bill is due, but being savvy with your cash doesn’t mean you can’t have a great wardrobe too. There are lots of easy (and fun!) ways to save money on your fashion fix – and you could even get the season’s must-have items for free! Take a look at our guide to saving money on your wardrobe for some inspiration:
Use Coupons And Voucher Codes
There are hundreds of web sites offering a host of discounts, offers, and deals to use in-store and online – and high street stores love them! Keep an eye out for coupons for up to 50 per cent off items at your favorite shop at sites such as myvouchercodes and Groupon. And remember, often you can double up on vouchers if you find more than one, just check the terms and conditions. Many vouchers can also be used on already discounted items. It’s also a good idea to keep an eye out for in-store publications, which often carry tear-out vouchers for last minute discounts and freebies. For Penny Saver Blog UK readers New Look, Dorothy Perkins and Marks and Spencer are good ones to look out for!

The best time to visit your local farmer’s market is in the fall when all the sellers are trying to get rid of their produce. During the summer you may find good deals, but in the fall you are guaranteed to find them.

With the increased cost of food prices these days, everything we can do to save a little is worth a try. I have been reading various articles that provide tips on saving on groceries, and many of them suggest that when you shop you should go alone.
I would have to agree. I usually do my grocery shopping once every two weeks and I usually go alone. When I do, I know exactly what I have already got, and what I still need to pick up. I feel like I can take as much time as I want without worrying about anyone else.

Safeway can be a really affordable place to buy your groceries if you are really selective in what you purchase. There are a really great perks to shopping at Safeway including excellent customer service and fresh, high quality produce. Canadians also have the benefit of collecting Air Miles. The downside is that Safeway is pricy unless you are careful. You definitely want to apply for the Safeway Club Card so you can take advantage of the sales. Otherwise you are paying way more for your purchase.

Sometimes it is easy to get suckered into buying more than we need because the price sometimes drops when you buy more. However, if you end up buying more than you need and you end up letting some go to waste, then you have really not saved any money at all.
For example, one time my husband and I were really hungry and we stopped at a grocery store. The lady behind the counter was selling various flavors of chicken wings and she managed to persuade us to buy two pounds of them! You see, the price dropped by a dollar a pound if we bought at least two pounds. Her argument was you might as well get two pounds since the price drops.

Daily we are bombarded with all sorts of advertisements, whether it’s on TV, on the radio, or on a sign while commuting to work. Advertisements are unavoidable, and there are many of them that say they will give you something for free. Free is good, we think, and we may fall into the trap of buying an overpriced item because we actually think we are getting something for nothing. That is usually not the case.
