My husband and I are highly in favor of buying used instead of new whenever possible. This goes for anything from kitchen stuff to furniture to books, and pretty much anything else you can think of. We like to buy used items for a few reasons. First, it saves us a lot of money. Someone else already paid full price for it and all the taxes, so we benefit from the lower cost without the tax. Second, we don’t have as much attachment to it so if we decided to pack up and move, we wouldn’t think twice about reselling it or giving it away.

Not too long ago, my husband and I noticed a puddle of water on the floor near our kitchen sink. I thought nothing of it the first time and just mopped it up. A few minutes later, another puddle appeared. We soon realized that we had a leaky pipe and a rusted out drain.
We went to Home Depot to pick up supplies so we could repair the pipes and drain. The great thing about Home Depot is that the employees there not only know where everything is located throughout the store, they often have specialized knowledge regarding how the parts work and how to do the repairs.

As I am sure you have noticed, the cost of food has gone up recently. You may have also noticed that rather than increasing the cost of certain foods, companies are changing the sizes of their items instead. For example, that ice cream product that you buy that used to be 2 liters may now be closer to a liter and a half. The cereal may cost the same amount, but if you look closely you will see that you are getting less for your money as they decreased the weight.
Don’t be a food snob. Ignore attractive packaging. Focus on what you are getting for your money. When you shop, make sure you are not in a big hurry, because it will take a few extra minutes to compare various products to make sure you are getting the biggest bang for your buck.

I seldom buy anything at Shoppers Drug Mart as I can usually get everything I need at Superstore, but the few times I have gone to Shoppers, I discovered that they provide great incentives there whenever you spend a specific amount of money. For example, just recently my husband and I went to pick up some special toothbrushes there and because we spent more than $75 we got a $20 gift card for Boston Pizza. Nice!

Many people will advise you not to go grocery shopping when you are hungry because you will end up buying more than you anticipated. I completely agree as I have discovered firsthand that this is exactly what happens if I shop on an empty stomach. Anything that looks remotely edible becomes appealing and I end up buying a whole lot of items that I never would have even considered under normal circumstances.

Do you ever make a purchase at one store and then go around to other stores afterwards to compare prices to make sure you paid a reasonable amount for your item? It is kind of silly, as it is perhaps better to just do your comparison shopping before committing to a purchase, but it is just human nature sometimes to do it the other way around.
I have a silly story to share about the time my husband and I were visiting friends in another city. We decided we wanted to buy our friends a garlic press, as we think everyone should own one if they like to cook with garlic.
