This past spring, I decided to try planting some tomatoes without buying any seeds, soil, or other gardening supplies. Here’s how I did it:
First, I cut toilet paper rolls in half and put them in a tray. I added soil from our compost pile to each half roll. There was a roma tomato in the fridge that was starting to go bad, so I sliced it up and put one slice into each half roll and then covered the slice with a little bit more soil. I watered the plants and put them near the window where they would have adequate sunlight.
Within a few weeks, small little green tomato plants began to break through the soil. Within a few more weeks, I was able to plant the plants, toilet paper rolls and all (because they are biodegradable) into larger pots. Within yet a few more weeks, I put them in larger pots and set them outside.
Now the plants are very tall and have yellow flowers. I can’t wait to see how many tomatoes grow on these plants!
The same process can be applied to many other types of vegetables. You can basically plant vegetables at no cost, and the health benefits of eating homegrown vegetables cannot be understated. Happy gardening!
