Family, Money Saving Tips

How My Family Saves Money

Saving money is a hotter topic than ever these days due to such high inflation rates. Money seems worthless these days. Everything costs so much more than it used to, and it’s unlikely that prices will ever go back to what they once were.

In this post, I’m going to share just a few ways that my family is currently saving money, and hopefully one of these will resonate with you and help you find ways that work for your family.

Timer on the Hot Water Tank. My husband installed a timer so that our hot water tank only heats up at night when the power is less expensive. So far, we haven’t had any shortage of hot water by doing this, but it has resulted in significant savings.

Eat Out Infrequently. We have never been in the habit of eating out very frequently, but we eat out even less than before. We save eating out now only for special occasions such as birthdays or other important celebrations. Otherwise, we just eat home-cooked meals. Sometimes we might buy a special food, but it’s from the grocery store, so there’s no tax or tip.

Use Old Cell Phones. My cell phone is an iPhone 6. It was my father’s old phone from about 6 years ago. It still works for talking and texting, but many apps no longer work. It doesn’t bother me, though, as it still provides me with basic services that I use daily.

Buy Bulk. I know that not everyone can afford this, but if you can, buy groceries and other essential items in bulk in order to save money. I shop at Costco once every month to stock up on grocery items. I find they are high quality, last a long time, and are usually less expensive.

Buy Items on Sale. Whenever I can, I wait for an item to go on sale before purchasing. I will check Wal-Mart, Amazon, and other retailers before making a purchase.

Buy Used Items. This one is my favorite. There are so many great Facebook groups and other online groups where you can buy used items. I know this takes extra time, but especially when you’re buying something bigger, it’s usually worth your while.

These are just a few ideas. Start brainstorming with your family, and you are sure to come up with some good ideas of your own!
