5 Home Improvements That Help Reduce Energy Usage & Costs

home improvements that can save you moneyChances are, there are a couple of times each year when you find yourself looking around certain areas of your home and you think to yourself “This space could definitely use a bit of an upgrade.” While it’s nice to do aesthetic changes such as coloring the walls another color or purchasing some new furniture, did you know that there are some home improvements that can actually help to reduce the amount of energy you use; ones that help to lower the amount of money that you spend each month? If you’re curious to know about what some of those things are, keep reading:

Conduct your own energy audit. Before you do anything, we advise that you conduct your own energy audit in your house. When it comes to monitoring the use of energy in your house, it’s a surefire way to determine what areas of your home are working at optimal levels and which are not. (For more information, go to Energy.gov and put “Do It Yourself Energy Audits” in the search field.)

Put in a couple of more ceiling fans. During extreme hot and cold weather, that is when we tend to rely the most on our central air units. This also means that more times than not, that’s when our electricity bills double or triple the average amount. One way to help to keep them down is to turn on the ceiling fans that you already have and/or to buy a couple of more. In the summer, they help to circulate cool air and in the winter, if you set them to rotate counterclockwise, they pull the warm air down closer to where you and your family are sitting.

How To Make Wise Financial Decisions in College

smart money tips for studentsMany college students are not well-equipped to make sound financial decisions, and there are a couple of reasons why. For one thing, they haven’t had to manage their own finances to this point. Even those that have held a job or had to maintain an asset like a car have had help from their parents. Very few students reach college with the experience of paying for rent and utilities under their belt. But even worse is the fact that they have received little to no education on the subject of personal finance. They might not even have a bank account, much less the knowledge needed to earn, save, budget, and build credit. Unfortunately, this makes them prime targets for credit card companies, who swoop in to offer young adults what seems to be “free” money, but actually comes with unfavorable terms such as high interest rates, annual fees, and more. So if it happens that you’re not particularly savvy when it comes to financial matters, here are just a few guidelines to help you make wise decisions during your time in college.

The first and perhaps most important lesson is that you must live within your means. This can be a tenuous undertaking when you are forced to take on the debt of student loans, you are living off your parents, or both. But you’re now an adult and it’s high time you learned how to handle your money in a responsible manner. And the easiest way to start is by creating a basic budget. You know what your expenses are, and if you don’t you should sit down with your parents to figure it out. Your list should include tuition, fees, and related expenses, as well as dorms, a meal plan, and other living costs. If you have a car, you’ll need to include loan payments and all associated costs such as registration, insurance, fuel, parking, and maintenance. And you’ll no doubt have other items to add.

Tips For Investing In Property

tips for investing in propertyThere are many ways you can invest your money, and each investment comes with its own set of risks and potential rewards.  Stocks, for instance, can be extremely volatile.  While some think that investing in property is very risky, it doesn’t have to be as long as you know what you are doing.  Taking calculated risks can be very profitable.  Below are some tips you can follow if you want to start investing in property.

Understand the risks involved.  One thing I can’t emphasize enough is the importance of understanding what you are getting into.  You will need to be aware that unexpected expenses will arise in the form of maintenance costs, repairs, and much more.  So you will need to make sure you have enough money set aside to cover those expenses.  You also need to be aware that you will not likely make a profit immediately.  It could take a year or two before your rent monies actually amount to extra money in your bank account.

See the potential.  For instance, if you are looking at property for sale in Turkey, the first thing you should do is not only focus on what is presently there – but envision the potential of what the property could be in the future.  Think about what improvements you could make and make sure you are aware of your local area and local market.  Is the property near water, near a good university, or near a popular tourist spot?

The Difference Between Being Frugal And Being Cheap

are you frugal or cheapEverybody knows that buying things that are cheap is much better than buying things that are expensive, right? Well, not exactly. What you need to understand is that there is a difference between being frugal and being cheap.

The biggest problem that people have is they get these two definitions mixed up and it makes them look bad. You are being cheap when you spend very little but in doing so you sacrifice quality. You are being frugal when you are spending very little but you are getting good deals on exceptional products.   For example, if you search cheap London hotels, frugal folks will find great deals on really nice hotels.  Every one knows that traveling in Europe can be expensive, however, if you are willing to do a little leg work, you can really find some amazing deals online without having to sacrifice quality.   Alternatively, cheap customers will end up in a dumpy hotel that is uncomfortable and perhaps even unsanitary.   Frugal customers will have gone online to a website like Priceline.com or Travelstay.com and got a great room for the same price as the cheap customer, but will be staying in a comfortable, clean room.   So you see there is definitely a big difference between being cheap and being frugal.  Below are some more examples to drill home the point:

Four Tips For First Time Stock Investors

stock market investing tipsIf you have never purchased stocks before, then you need to read this first. Yes, stocks are a great way to invest your money but they are still risky if you don’t know what you are doing. It is because of this that I recommend that you learn a little bit about stocks before you put a penny into them.

Before I get into the four tips for first time stock investors I just want to make sure that you have money in savings first. The reason I say this is because a stock investment should not be considered a savings account as they carry risk.

Don’t Buy Before Doing Research – Just like you wouldn’t buy a property without first doing your research, likewise if you don’t research a stock, then you won’t know the first thing about it. What most people don’t understand is that all stocks carry different risks and rewards and you need to know that in order to make the best decision.  There are courses you can take to learn how to research companies.  I highly recommend that you take a reputable course if you are planning on trading stocks for a living.  If you are married, it’s a good idea to both take the course so that you will both understand the risks involved with investing.
