You Don’t Have To Be Rich To Open an RESP

An article recently posted on globeinvestor.com suggests that not enough Canadian parents are taking advantage of the Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) to save for their children’s education.  According to the article, it’s primarily the highly educated folks with higher incomes that are taking advantage of them, and the people with lower incomes who could really benefit a lot from them either don’t know enough about them or think they just don’t have the means to open one.

The great thing about RESPs is that you don’t need to have a lot of money to open one.  So if one of your savings goals is to help your child pay for post secondary education, an RESP is the best way to do it because your child will receive free money from the government in the form of grants and bonds.  In some cases, even if you don’t put any money into the RESP, your child may still receive some money from the government.

Opening one is easy.  Once you have applied for your child’s Social Insurance Number, sit down with an account manager at your financial institution of choice and ask to open an RESP.  When you open one you will automatically be applying for any government grant and bond money that is applicable to your child.  You can even open a family plan if you have more than one child.  The benefit of the family plan is that if one or more of your children decide not to further their education, the child or children who do can use the money invested in the RESP.

Review Your Bank Accounts And Save Money On Fees

Are you still using the same bank account that you had when you were a child?  If so, it’s time for you to review your bank accounts.  This is also a good idea for anyone who hasn’t done a review of his/her bank accounts for a long time.  You may be surprised to discover that you have been spending a lot of money on service fees simply because you don’t have the right banking package, or you could be forfeiting earning interest because you don’t have an interest bearing account.

The key is to be proactive.  The best way to ensure you are using the best banking package to suit your needs, is to get a hold of a copy of the statement of fees for your financial institutions holding your accounts and determine what fees you are being charged on a regular basis.  You can often find fee information online as well. Also, most accounts set up for children pay a very low interest rate, so if you are still using one, you should contact your financial institution and get it changed over to an interest-bearing account.

Ask For Last Year’s Merchandise And Save Money

A great way to save money when you shop is to be willing to purchase last year’s merchandise.   When buying shoes, don’t be afraid to ask the sales representative if they have any shoes left over from last year in your size.   If you are lucky, they will have just the shoes you are looking for, and at discounted prices since they came from last year’s stock.

Recently my husband and I benefited from this strategy.  While shopping for shoes in the States, the shoe salesperson brought out various pairs of shoes from last year that fit us perfectly. We were able to get good quality shoes without paying regular price.  As a result, we saved at least $60.

How Watching The Doctor Oz Show Can Save You Money

Recently my husband and I have been watching The Dr. Oz Show on T.V.   The show is great for those interested in learning tips on developing healthy habits, but watching the show can also save you money, especially for those who have to pay to visit a doctor.  Poor health leads to hefty medical expenses that can often be avoided by following Dr. Oz’s advice on getting exercise, eating properly, and being able to recognize symptoms of a heart attack, stroke, and other major diseases.

Dr. Oz, a heart surgeon, and the host of the show, offers great tips on what home remedies are safe and effective.  These remedies are often much cheaper than buying medications at the pharmacy.  Many of the remedies can be found on the doctoroz.com website.
