Flooring – Reduce Labor Costs & Do The Prep Work Yourself

how to save money when you instal new flooringMy husband and I are currently in the midst of getting new flooring installed in our home.  We bought a home which is around 30 years old and some of the carpets were still the original ones from when the home was first built.  Needless to say it was time for a change.

We decided to install vinyl flooring in our kitchen, laundry room and dining room.  We saved quite a bit of money by doing the majority of the prep work ourselves.  This involved pulling the two old layers of linoleum off of the subfloor and then scraping the remnants along with the adhesive off of the plywood subfloor.  This was not a pleasant experience, but we saved ourselves about $50 per hour by not paying someone else to do it.

When it came time to install the vinyl, we hired a local professional to take care of it.  We were very happy with the results and we are planning on hiring him again to do the rest of the upstairs.

Save Money As A Do-It-Yourselfer

DIY and save moneyDo you know how to tile floors, reroof a house, paint walls or fix a car? If you do, then you can save a lot of money by doing everything yourself. If you don’t know how, then you don’t have to hire somebody to do it for you, you can simply learn how to do everything on your own.

What most people don’t realize is that people who have to hire a professional will pay more than they should simply because it is a skill that requires some experience. This is where the internet will come in handy.

Tips To Do It Yourself

Watch Videos – The nice thing about the internet is that many people will create a YouTube video on how to do certain things. If you want to know how to rewire a house, then there are people on YouTube that will show you how to do that. If you want to renovate your bathroom, then there will be a step by step video on how you do that as well. All of this stuff can be found on YouTube, so make sure you go there first before you try something you are not sure about.

Practice First – Yes, you need to practice. It doesn’t matter what you are doing, you need to give it a try first before you attempt it for real. If you are rebuilding the transmission for your car, then I recommend you attempt it with an older car, not a brand new car that will cost thousands of dollars to fix in the event that you mess things up. Now, if you are texturing a wall, then practice in a closet where nobody will see what you did. I know this sounds weird but the truth is that it will work.

Enjoy Foods From Around The World For Less

If you are like me, you enjoy trying foods from different countries from time to time.  The easiest way to do this, of course, would be to go to a specialized restaurant that serves that special cuisine you have always wanted to try.  However, going out to eat is often really expensive and may not fit within your entertainment budget.  But that doesn’t have to stop you from trying different things and expanding your menu.

Rather than eating out, check out local markets and small grocers in your area that offer goods from various countries.  Major cities will often have stores catering to their multicultural populations so it shouldn’t be hard to find grocery stores and shops that sell delicacies from around the world.

Make Your Own Wine

save money by making your own wineIf you enjoy having a glass of wine now and then but you really don’t like spending the money on it, consider making your own wine.  My husband and I just made our very first batch recently and although it is somewhat time consuming; it’s also kind of fun. It will probably take us less time the next time we try it because we will know what we are doing.  The first time we had quite the adventure filtering our wine, but nonetheless we learned how to do it so the next time should be much easier.

We purchased a wine kit and with all of the supplies we spent about $190.00.  We ended up with 31 750ml bottles – so that works out to approximately $6.10 per bottle.  When we make our second batch, if we end up with the same number of bottles, they will only cost $2.25 each because the only thing we will need to purchase is the wine mix.  Not bad!

So, if you are up for the challenge of trying something new, and you enjoy drinking wine, you might want to consider making some, too.

The kind we made – Australian Cabernet Shiraz – took us one month to make by going through 4 stages.  The last stage took the longest because we had to filter the wine and then bottle it and cork it.  The other 3 stages were quite simple and didn’t take very much time at all. Winemaking is fun and if you like drinking wine, this is definitely a cheaper option than buying it from the store where you will pay at least $10 per bottle plus tax.  Wine makes a great gift, too, so you can share the fruits of your labor with others!

Happy winemaking!
