A Great Way To Spend Time With Your Kids This Christmas – Make Dough Ornaments

With Christmas just around the corner, it’s time to get your creative juices flowing.   Your kids are going to want to do something cool this Christmas with you, so why not create some great memories by making your own Christmas ornaments this year?  There’s a really simple dough recipe below that you can use to make all sorts and varieties of ornaments

Dough Ornament Recipe

4 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup salt

1 ½ cups warm water

Mix flour and salt.  Slowly add warm water, and stir to form a stiff dough.  Press dough to about 1/8 inch thick, and use cookie cutters to cut out ornaments.  Add ornament hooks to the top before baking. Bake at 325 degrees until ornaments have hardened, about 50 minutes.  Cool.

Decorating ideas

Now you have to decide whether or not to make them edible.  If you want to keep them to use again and again, then a great way to decorate them is to use acrylic paints.  You may also want to coat them with shellac to help preserve them.  The neat thing about using them year after year is the fond memories they will bring back each year when you decorate for Christmas.

If you get hungry…

If you decide to eat them rather than preserve them, just use different colors of frosting to decorate them and then bon appétit!   (And hold off on the shellac!)

There are lots of neat ways to spend time with your kids this Christmas, and the activities don’t have to cost an arm and a leg.  The key is the quality time you can spend with them.

In case you are wondering, I got this recipe idea while reading an interesting book written by Cindy Woodsmall and Miriam Flaud entitled Plain Wisdom.

What are some things that you do with your family during the Christmas season?
