How To Reduce Food Waste – 5 Freezer Tips

Can you believe that most households in North America waste about 25% of their food?  Want to reduce the amount of food you waste every year?  Below are some great freezer tips that will help you to do just that.

1.  If you have leftovers from dinner, put them directly into the freezer so that they don’t go to waste, rather than forgetting about them in the fridge and then throwing them out because they’ve gone bad.

2   Prevent freezer burn by double bagging your food.  Put individual items into inexpensive sandwich bags and then put a number of the smaller bags together in a larger freezer bag.  You can reuse the freezer bag over and over since it never touches the food directly.

3.  Keep your freezer as full as possible to increase its energy efficiency.  If you don’t have a lot of food in your freezer, just fill a few water bottles two thirds full and place them in your freezer and that should do the trick.

4.  Blanch your veggies first before freezing them.  Make sure to pack them in airtight containers.

5.  Avoid freezing milk products whenever possible as it can result in a change of consistency and taste.  I discovered that if I put cheddar cheese in the freezer it ends up being really crumbly when I thaw it and it definitely doesn’t taste as good.  If you freeze milk, you will end up with unwanted “floaties”, so do your best to use up your milk products rather than freezing them whenever possible.

Saw a family on the television spending £200 on food per week for 2 adults and 2/3 children. And they were throwing food away every single day, and they acknowledged this, they even threw away food that was not opened, and always made the portion’s too big. So 56 weeks x £50-£100 extra, because £100 or so, should be about fine for an average weekly shop, at the most, although food prices have gone up. Crazy
